For this sculpture I took artistic liberty with color. Instead of a greenish brown exterior I used the vibrant blue of a horseshoe crab’s special blood to raise awareness to the issue of bleeding these creatures for medical research. Horseshoe Crab (Limulus Polyphemus) The Atlantic horseshoe crab can be found in the waters of the Atlantic coastline ,including Staten Island from Florida to Massachusetts. Often called a living fossil since the species is almost unchanged for hundreds of years. More closely related to arthropods (spiders and scorpions) is frequently seen along the beaches of the island during their May-July breeding season. The “blue blood” of the horseshoe crab is very important for medical and pharmaceutical research.
